Performance festival / Collective offering – Reunion Island – 2022

Formed by artists João Viera Torres, Fabiana Ex-Souza and Calixto Neto, the MAN.GUE collective is an international platform for artistic experimentation combining visual art, performance, dance, and cinema, between France and Brazil.

With the Radeau/Raft project, we started from the concept and history of the so called “New World,” which in some respects is also the story of a shipwreck. This shipwreck, we consider it here as the allegory of a collision, also known as discovery. The “Old World,” contaminated by the presumption of technological superiority, takes possession of the worlds it considers its own and new. By imposing an ideal of progress and modernity, this Old World establishes a relationship of domination (which continues to this day) to colonize these territories, build its empires, and extract resources. The consequence of these processes was the destruction of living beings and their ways of life.

For us, the MAN.GUE collective, rebuilding possible worlds thus becomes a daily exercise. As artists with Afro-Brazilian and Amerindian origins, our personal and artistic journeys have often led us to question the dynamics of re-existence, namely, how to tinker from the debris.

From our respective life experiences as ethnic minorities, diasporic migrants, and LGBTQIA+ individuals, we weave encounters and experiences of collective construction opening towards possible worlds to reinvent.

This collaborative project will showcase the performances and creations of the following artists:

Sophie Hoarau . Christian Jalma aka Pink Floyd . Jean Claude Jolet . Kaloune . Nicolas Moucazambo . Myriam Omar Awadi. Tiéri Riviére . LaBox . Yohann Quëland de Saint-Pern.

Centered around ancestral knowledge, the project’s objective is the creation of a raft designed with local elements and used as a performative element for artistic interventions. The MAN.GUE collective will conclude the day with a collective offering performance around the Raft.
